A CAMPAIGNER from Kenton is to be honoured for her outstanding work raising awareness of the issues confronting young disabled Londoners.

Krishna Talsania, 30, of Westfield Gardens, has muscle-wasting condition Charcot-Marie Tooth disease and suffers balance problems and difficulties walking long distances.

She has been invited to undertake the special duty of lighting the ceremonial candle to burn throughout the charity’s fundraising candle-lit Christmas concert at a church in Stoke Newington, east London, this evening (Thursday).

The 30-year-old said: “I’m so excited about coming to the Spirit of Christmas concert and being the VIP candle lighter. I couldn’t really believe it when I found out and I had to read the letter twice. It’s a real privilege to be recognised by the charity in this way.”

Krishna is a member of Muscular Dystrophy Campaign’s Trailblazers, a 400-strong campaign group of disabled 18-30 year-olds.

This year, the 30-year-old psychology graduate, who is one of Harrow Council’s Neighbourhood Champions, conducted interviews on ITV1’s Daybreak programme and BBC Radio London, and wrote a blog for The Guardian’s website about disability issues.

She has also lobbied many times in and around the Houses of Parliament to help break down the barriers that disabled young people face in accessing higher education, employment, public transport and social and leisure opportunities.

Laura Watts, the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign’s volunteer fundraising manager for London, said: “Krishna has made an outstanding contribution this year both to the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign, and to helping make our City a better home for young disabled people. We feel truly honoured to have her as our guest.”
