The Keens have hit back after a week of public criticism as details about their expenses claims were finally revealed.

The furious couple, MP's for Brentford & Isleworth and neighbouring Feltham & Heston, insisted in an angry statement that they would have 'preferred that the information was released much earlier'.

They also threatened to take action against newspapers that 'felt it necessary to embellish and twist the truth'.

Health Minister Ann Keen, 59, and her husband Alan, 70, have come under fire for their decision to spend £175,000 of taxpayers' cash on a flat in Waterloo, when their Brentford home is just nine miles from the Houses of Parliament.

Matthew Elliott, Chief Executive of campaign group the TaxPayers' Alliance, said: "It's clear that this allowance pays for much more than just a base in London - MPs use it to fund a lifestyle far more comfortable than their constituents enjoy.

"Given the economic climate and the fact that everyone's feeling poorer, it's high time MPs reined in the amounts they spend."

For details of the Keens' spending see this week's Chronicle, out on Thursday.
