THE borough's best designed buildings were recognised at the annual Ealing Civic Society awards held on Thursday evening.

As part of the 21st annual ceremony, six buildings with special architectural merit were shortlisted by judges and John Perryn Primary School in Long Drive, Acton, scooped first prize.

The People's Choice category was decided via a poll on the Ealing Gazette website and saw Notting Hill and Ealing High School Sixth Form Centre come up trumps, followed by the revamped St. Mary's Church in Northolt.

Commended buildings included Northolt Leisure Centre and Jubilee Gardens Health Centre and Library , and Greg Birdseye, a member of the executive committee, said: "The evening went very well and there were around 80 guests.

"Bettany Hughes, an Ealing-born broadcaster, author and historian was excellent and she told the audience what she liked about the borough and introduced her new book.

"This year's standard was very high and we usually give certificates but decided to give John Perryn an award - we liked the way the site was used, slightly rising and there are fantastic views of the capital including the London Eye.

"There is also a lot of natural light through the corridors. Jubilee Gardens Health Centre and Library was commended as the judges thought it was a good way of bringing two services under one building - it's not just a simple doctor's surgery.

"And Northolt Leisure Centre offers facilities for all the community - three swimming pools, a café, large community room and dance studios."

The awards were held at Ealing Town Hall, Queens Hall on Thursday November 4.
