IMPROVEMENTS to Northwood Hills town centre will become apparent in the next few weeks.

Work was due to start on June 10, following the Northwood Hills Independents Day street event, but there was a hold-up in getting all the utility companies on board. But engineers are due to start work on Monday next week.

“Everything is in place now,” said Councillor Andrew Retter (Con).

“I was disappointed to tell people it had been put off so I am pleased that we finally have some good news at last.”

He said that any work planned by gas, electricity, water or telephone companies whose lines or pipes run through the high street had to be done before the changes could be implemented.

In the meantime, Joel Street has had a mini-facelift thanks to brightly coloured hanging baskets on lamp-posts along the parade, installed as part of Hillingdon in Bloom. It is hoped they can be transferred to new lamp-posts in due course.

The first stage of the work includes the new lamp-posts, with the aim of creating more light and safer streets, and the removal of some of the trees, which will be replaced in a central boulevard with additional flowering trees along pavements.

Old street furniture such as benches, cycle stands, litter bins and signs will be replaced and there will be an increase in the number of parking spaces.

The funding for the changes is being supplied by the Mayor of London, and residents had their say at the end of last year as to what the money should be spent on.

“It is my intention to keep residents updated as the work progresses and if they want any further information, they should not hesitate in contacting me,” added Mr Retter.
