The appalling arrogance of Armani-clad Jawad Saindi beggars belief.

He is in need of a salutary lesson in good manners. This country provides his family with a home, and all he can do is sneer at us disdainfully but at the same time announce his intention of continuing to soak the system.

Is it an impertinence to ask why, if our homes are such rabbit hutches, is he not living in a spacious mansion in Afghanistan?

A couple of years ago, an Afghan of my acquaintance who had been living here legally for under three years had been provided with social housing on a new estate.

My father fought for this country in the Second World War and, with a wife and three children, was on the waiting list for 11 years before being allocated a council house.

If the council (or arm of central government) is indeed 'dumb,'then I suggest they consolidate this dumbness and make a virtue of it.

How about their becoming too dumb to hire temporary staff to make important decisions? Too dumb to deal with people who have no respect for us?

The British public, who work for a living, pay their local and national taxes and expect reward on merit, are sick to the back teeth of unscrupulous Johnny-come-lately spongers, and also of unaccountable, unsackable public officials who rarely give a full reply to questions about irregularities. Correction: it seems temporary staff are sackable. By the way, why was it that temporary staff were involved in important decision making to the extent of approving rent at twice the going level?

I, for one, very much want to know, but something tells me the answer of an official spokesperson might be, 'well, now you know what it is to want'.
