A cinema in Feltham was the setting for a very happy ending when an Isleworth man proposed to his girlfriend.

Ramakrishnan Iyer, 25, was trying to find the perfect way to pop the question to girlfriend Jaya Nadar, 25, but kept hitting stumbling blocks with his ambitious plans to show his love.

He hoped to get a plane to write it in the sky, but discovered this is illegal in London, and then came up with the idea of asking Miss Nadar to be his wife at the movies.

Mr Iyer spoke to cinema management who agreed to help him with his daring plan.

The call centre manager said: "I chose to do it on February 12 because she was working on Valentines Day. I created a presentation on my computer and the cinema agreed to play it before the screening of Patalia House in the afternoon.

"I had to cook up a story about a film launch at the cinema with celebrities there so she would definitely agree to go, and to explain why so many of our friends were coming too."

Mr Iyer carefully prepared the eight slide presentation complete with poems and photographs and ensured it was tested before the big day so there would be no technical glitches.

He said: "I took her into the cinema and I don't think she suspected a thing. I asked the manager to drop call me when the slide show was about to come on, he did, and so I told Jaya I was going to get some popcorn.

"Then I went into the corridor where two friends were waiting with the ring and some flowers. As soon as the last slide came on I went up on stage. She came down and I took her to the centre of the stage, got down on one knee and asked her if she would like to spend the rest of her life with me."

Around 400 theatre goers were clapping and cheering as a teary Miss Nadar, a financial specialist for the Post Office, said yes.

Mr Iyer said: "I was sure she was going to say yes. When I walked in all I could see was Jaya so I felt confident. I could hear so much cheering and clapping. We are both so happy."

The couple, who have been together since last June after meeting at work, hope to tie the knot on December 10 this year. It will be the same day as Mr Iyer's parents' wedding anniversary.

Miss Nadar said: "It was a huge surprise, I wasn't expecting it at all. As soon as it all came up on the screen I got really nervous and started shaking, but it all went so well.

"I feel like I'm on cloud nine."

Justina Nicholson, general manager for Cineworld Feltham, said: "We were delighted to accommodate Saturday’s proposal to celebrate this wonderful occasion."
