AN ISLEWORTH schoolboy is to have his picture plasted across double decker buses throughout London.

Barry Smart, 14, a pupil at Isleworth and Syon School in Ridgeway Road, Isleworth, will be a poster boy for the Diana Awards - after he won its Courageous Citizen category in May - for tirelessly looking after his younger disabled sister.

As part of his prize he visited 10 Downing Street on December 12 and was made the face of the charity.

He said: “I am really proud that I am going to appear on the side of a bus as an inspiring young person. It is not every day you see yourself on the side of a bus."

Barry, of Brentford, balances his school work with helping his mum care for his sister who has cerebral palsy and other medical conditions.

Along with helping her with her day to day care he also cooks for her.

He said: "Going to Number 10 was a once in a life time opportunity, it's not every day you get to do this, it was a lot bigger than I expected it to be.

"I am a secondary carer for my sister and also I look out for people younger than me at school. Some of them might not be sure where certain things are so I help them out."

When at school Barry looks forward to food technology so he can practise cooking and in his free time likes to fish. He said: "It relaxes me and I have caught a few big ones."

While at Number 10 Barry met with Minister for Children and Families Tim Loughton and other young achievers.

Barry added: "Tim Loughton was very down to earth, he had time to talk to everyone and listen to what they have done.

"My friends and family are all very happy for me and keep saying 'well done'. I was happy that other people got recognised too for their work too."

The Diana Award was established in 1999 in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, in recognition of her work with young people.
