TWO illegal immigrants were discovered hiding in a lorry en-route to Rickmansworth, customs officials have revealed.

Two men were found in the back of an Italian meat lorry driven by a Romanian national, which was stopped by UK Border Agency officers working at the Channel Tunnel entrance in Coquelles, France, on June 27.

Officers used heart beat detection technology to search the trailer and found the men, who claimed to be Sudanese, hiding in the side lockers. Both the driver and his employer could face a fine.

Tom Dowdall, director of European operations for the UK Border Agency, said: "Finds such as this one highlight the tenacity required by UK Border Agency officers to stay one step ahead of illegal immigration. This is why we have our own border checks in France – to try to prevent illegal entrants even setting foot in the UK.

"In 2009 we stopped over 29,000 individual attempts to cross the channel illegally and searched over one million freight vehicles. The UK Border Agency is committed to tackling illegal immigration and its harmful effects."
