There could be up to 30 trains per hour running on HS2, according to the railway’s chief engineer.

Giving a lecture on the design of the line, Professor Andrew McNaughton said that sophisticated signalling, plus ‘acceleration lanes’, could increase service frequency from the planned 18 trains per hour, up to 30.

He said the design of HS2 was predicated on ‘very high speed’ trains, rather than standard high-speed rolling stock like those used by Eurostar.

Meanwhile, Lib Dem mayoral candidate Brian Paddick met anti-HS2 protesters in Ruislip on Saturday. Ruislip Against HS2 chairman Lottie Jones said they were unimpressed with Mr Paddick’s lack of HS2 knowledge, but were happy to educate him.

“Since he is an ex-policeman we told him HS2 was a crime and the project was a criminal waste of money.

“He said he needed more information.”
