A major campaign was launched today to help Hounslow's over-60s keep in good health during the winter months.

Leaflets will be sent out to thousands of households as part of the 'Keep Warm, Keep Well' scheme.

The campaign has been set up amid new evidence from the Met Office which shows heart attacks and strokes are more frequent after cold spells.

The drive was announced at NHS Hounslow at Heston Day Care Centre by Hounslow's health chiefs.

The leaflet recommends older people get the flu jab every year, know what benefits they are entitled to and eat and drink warm things.

Paula Connery, 91, who socialises at the day care centre and had a sneak preview of the leaflet, said: “I feel ready for the winter. There’s some useful information in the leaflet.”

The leaflet also tells senior citizens to check electric blankets and water bottles for any damage, keep important phone numbers ready and make contact with neighbours so there are people close by.

Sue Jeffers, director of nursing at NHS Hounslow, said: “If you have any concerns or queries about keeping well this winter, contact your local GP or pharmacist to get advice.”
