Scouts learnt the phonetic alphabet, participated in plane spotting and were guided through aircraft marshalling, before collecting their aviation skills certificate and badge.

The 4th Hounslow scout group visited Heathrow's headquarters at the Compass Centre, last Friday (10), where they were taken towards the top of the building for a panoramic view of the airport.

They were shown a video of how the airport was developed, its progress to date and the many celebrities and VIP's who have landed here over the years.

The youngsters also got the chance to spot aircraft from Boeing 737s to Airbus A319 and the superjumbo jet A380, learnt to spell their name using phonetics and got to try out marshalling a plane to its stand following instructions from the professionals.

They also named the taxiways and runways and were shown model planes to learn parts of an aircraft anatomy as well as naming airlines such as British Airways and Virgin by looking at the tail designs.

To earn the badge scouts also took turns in placing hand held buildings of terminals, fire station, cargo, and control and placed each in its correct position on a carpet with a satellite view of Heathrow.

Scout group leader Sue Klesel said: "The evening was a great success, and informative for both the scouts and leaders, who all had a great time, learning new skills and new information and facts concerning various aspects of aviation.

"Some of the scouts were so inspired they were asking if they could attend work experience at the airport."

The badge, which was dreamed up by young people on Heathrow's graduate training programme, features the airport's logo beneath the scouting emblem and the outline of a plane.
