A Hindu festival in Hounslow marking Lord Ganesha's birthday is expected to attract thousands of worshippers later this month.

Organisers claim the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations at the Laxmi Narayan Temple, in Neville Close, Hounslow, will be the largest in west London.

The event, taking place on August 29 and 30, is expected to attract even more than the estimated 4,000 people who attended over the course of the weekend in 2013 .

The festival, now in its seventh year, will begin as usual on the Friday morning, with the arrival of the Lord Ganesha idol - all the way from India, where it was sculpted - and prayers taking place at 9.15am.

Children's activities, including fancy dress, singing and dancing competitions, will take place at the temple throughout the rest of the day.

Celebrations will continue on the Saturday, when they will culminate with a procession from the temple to Kingston Boat House, where the Ganesh statue will be immersed in the Thames.
