Council leader Peter Thompson has been cleared of misconduct after posting a link to a Tory website on his council blog.

The Conservative chief came under fire after including a link to Chris Grayling's website in his online diary on the council's site.

Mr Grayling is the Tory spokesman for work and pensions and his homepage includes a link to the Conservative Party site, leading to claims Cllr Thompson was using his council blog for political gain.

However, a report by Cherna Crone, chairman of the council's standards sub-committee, concludes Mr Thompson had not misused his position.

It said that although Mr Grayling's site had a party political purpose and was linked to the Tory Party site there was 'no evidence to suggest there was any intention (by Cllr Thompson) to direct the user to any other site'.

It continued that although it did not regard the complaint as 'trivial', subsequent letters in the press suggested it had been politically motivated.

The standards board agreed to write to remind Cllr Thompson to remind him 'about the effect of his blog'.
