It was heartening to see the Ealing Gazette give the saintly Ray and Marian Garnett publicity in their difficulties with the Ealing Council.

For 32 years this couple have unstintingly given their time and money helping animal welfare groups' noble tradition of the annual Animal Welfare Bazaar at Ealing Town Hall.

Due to the recession these charities have already had some loss of donations, particularly the charities struggling with an inundation of discarded family pets.

In the past I have held stalls at this venue, and also helped other stallholders in the last 25 years.

Owing to age and bad health I have had to limit my support by purchase of goods and making donations.

I see the same kind faces every year at this event, and for us folks who feel compassion for creatures without voices and cruelly exploited, it is the only time we can meet and encourage each other in the heartbreaking grind of raising funds.

This present council, as far as I'm aware, has done nothing for animals in the borough.

Gone is the animal centre in Walpole Park.

We lost our animal rights officers years ago, and also the Animal Rights Working Party.

The mind boggles at the cost of £2,400 for the day hire of the Victoria Hall.

How can Mr and Mrs Garnett pay an increase of £1,648 on top of £500 on posters?

The council will find it very difficult to find customers at these prices. Not even redundant bankers can afford them.
