I WAS reading about the Hoover building in your local paper and it brought back something that was said to me during the war.

I was serving with the Royal Marine Commandos and we were having a rest from the front line.

I was sitting in a cafe and got talking to an RAF pilot. He asked me where I lived. I replied 'Ealing'.

I also mentioned that my girlfriend worked at Hoover. He said when you write to her, tell her the Hoover building is a very difficult building to hit. It is very well camouflaged and

when you fly across Scotch Common straight on to Horsenden Hill, you miss it. That pleased her when I wrote to her. He was right. I married her.
