VOLUNTEERS from local charities slept in a perspex box in Kingston town centre to raise awareness of homelessness last week.

Staff from Kingston and Wimbleson YMCA and Kingston Churches Action on Homelessness took it in turns to sleep in the box in Clarence Street on October 30, which was filled with cardboard and newspaper to reflect the conditions of sleeping rough.

It was followed by a sponsored 'sleep out' in the Memorial Gardens from 6pm on October 31-6am on November 1. Passers by dug deep to donate £203.76.
