Northolt became awash with colour this week when Hindus converged at India Gardens to celebrate the annual event of Holi.

Tuesday's event, which involved a 'Holi Rave', paint throwing and lighting of a ceremonial fire, was hosted by the Shree Kutch Leva Patel community.

Arjan Vekaria, President of the Shree Kutch Leva community, said: "It was a really fun event, with even Deputy Mayor Seema Kumar, who was timid at first, eventually throwing around a bit of paint."

The festival marks the beginning of Spring in India and its roots lie with the ancient Indian ruler Hiranyakashyapu, an atheist, who tried to kill his son Prahalad for his religious beliefs.

The throwing of paint and raucous celebrations is supposed to promote forgiveness and fun.
