Young volunteers who encourage others to enjoy playing sport have been given tickets to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The teenagers, aged between 16 and 18, were given the tickets as a reward for volunteering to teach sport in schools across Hillingdon.

Hillingdon Council applied for tickets from the national sports charity StreetGames and gave them to eight hard-working and dedicated young people from Uxbridge College, Barnhill School and Harlington Community School.

From Harlington School in Pinkwell Lane, Hayes, 16-year-olds Rebecca Bungay, Jodi Bungay, Owen Antalika and Nicole Joseph will be joined by 18-year-olds Noorin Gulam and Louis Hampton-Jones from Barnhill School in Yeading Lane, Hayes and Kannagara Arachchige, 17 and Kerrie Harper, 18, from Uxbridge College in Park Road, Uxbridge.

They will travel to Glasgow on Tuesday, July 29 and watch netball the next day for free at the Games - which were officially opened by the Queen last night (Wednesday, July 23).

The group will also get the chance to explore the city and take part in activities organised by StreetGames.

Councillor Douglas Mills, cabinet member for community, commerce and regeneration, said: “It is a pleasure to be able to thank hard-working young volunteers who spend their time encouraging other young people to participate in sport and lead more active lives by offering them an unmissable opportunity to experience the inspiring atmosphere of Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games.”

All the volunteers are sports leaders at their school or college and were chosen because they play an important role in getting their peers interested in playing sport.

Many of them run various sport sessions for younger teenagers, as well as organising, supervising or refereeing competitions and events.
