Scouts celebrating the centenary year of their district are planning to parade for St George's Day as David Cameron says the day has been overlooked for too long.

In a St George's Day message, the Prime Minister said: "St George has been England's patron saint since 1350. But for too long, his feast day - England's national day - has been overlooked.

"Today, though, more and more people are coming together on or around April 23, eager to celebrate everything it is to be English."

Scout groups from Ruislip, Eastcote and Northwood (REN) District will do just that on Sunday with a parade from Ruislip Manor to Churchfield Gardens, Ruislip, accompanied by Yiewsley and West Drayton Marching Band and members of the girl guides.

A family fun day will then be held in Churchfield Gardens in Eastcote Road from 2.30pm.

St George’s Day parade is a big annual event for the scouts, who will be renewing their promise.

Assistant District Commissioner Sam Wright said: “Everyone has been really enthusiastic about the centenary celebrations and working really hard to put on so many fun and exciting activities.

“We have two major camps organised – one at the home of UK scouting, in Gilwell in June, and an expedition to Kandersteg in Switzerland for more than 270 scouts.”

Kyle Cox, 13, of 6th Eastcote group, is one of those going to Kandersteg in July.

“This is a really exciting year. I have been working really hard washing cars and helping out friends and family to raise some of the money towards the cost of the expedition,” he said.

The fun day is open to the general public, who can take part in some of the adventurous activities the young members take on throughout the year, such as Zorbing (rolling around inside a giant inflatable ball) and trying out a traverse climbing wall.
