THE winners of Hillingdon's Let's Do it Community Awards 2008 have been announced this afternoon (Monday).
The awards, which are promoted by Barclays in conjunction with the Gazette, are an annual event which have been running for several years and aim to give a cash boost to various good causes in the borough.
Harefield Stroke Support Group which took the title of overall winner said their £1,000 will be used it to take all members on a trip to the New Forest and to a music hall.
The grant, which was collected by a surprised, but grateful, Marjorie Jessup and Gwen Pinder who run the group, said it will mean they can pay for a specially adapted bus which costs around £800 to hire.
£500 grants went to the runners up, Perseverance Scouts based in Uxbridge for new cookery equipment for camping, and Brookside Community Association in Hayes to fund Meet Your Neighbour evenings which will include showcasing the talents of local youngsters .
The volunteer winner was Mencap Hillingdon North which means they will not only get £500 for a boat trip but will also get a team of volunteers from Barclays Bank to help the day go with a swing.
MPs John McDonnell (Hayes and Harlington) and John Randall (Uxbridge) joined the Mayor and Mayoress of Hillingdon, Councillor Brian Crowe and his wife Clare to congratulate the winners and hear about their groups.
