A heroic newsagent who was decorated for foiling armed robbers is shutting up shop after more than 30 years at the same store in Hounslow.

Behesh Pandya and his wife Krishna have run Park Avenue News, in Whitton Road, Hounslow, for nearly 32 years.

But the store is due to close next Saturday, November 29, as they retire to spend more time with their grandchildren and go travelling.

Mr Pandya was a sub-postmaster for more than 25 years and was recognised by the Post Office after risking his life to raise the alarm when gun-toting robbers struck in 1995.

His bravery didn't prevent him being stripped of his franchise five years later, as the Post Office slashed the number of branches nationally, but he continued to run the newsagents.

Mr Pandya was born in Nairobi, Kenya, and came to England about 40 years ago, after studying accountancy in India. He worked for nine years as a financial adviser before buying the shop in Whitton Road.

He already lives above the store and said he plans to convert the ground floor into housing for him and his family.

"I like the area and my customers so much I don't want to leave," he said.

"I'm looking forward to spending more time with my two grandchildren and we also want to travel, so I can make use of my five languages, and do some charity work."

Mr Pandya said there had been a post office at the site since 1932 and before that there was a blue cabin from which people could buy stamps as well as fruit and veg from the neighbouring allotment.
