RUSH hour traffic chaos was narrowly averted this morning (30 April) following a suspected car smash on the M4 Heathrow Spur in the early hours.

Concrete and debris showered the two main access roads to Terminals 1 and 3 following the incident which took place at around 1.30am this morning. The vehicle involved has not been traced.

The roads were closed and officers from Hillingdon council arrived at the scene, working through the night in a bid to have the road cleared in time for morning commuters and travellers.

Inspectors from Transport for London (TFL) assessed the damage done to the bridge and ruled that there was no danger of the road collapsing further.

It was given the all-clear and fully reopened at 8.15am.

A council spokesperson said: "Luckily no one was hurt by falling debris. If we hadn't have acted quickly it is not unrealistic to say that there could have been real chaos on the roads around Heathrow this morning, causing yet more unwanted disruption for travellers."
