A historic Stanmore building is set to be transformed into a private gym, complete with a doctor's surgery.

At the end of September, The Cottages, on Stanmore Broadway, which is a Grade II* listed building, will become a wellbeing centre, complete with personal train-ers and a healthy eating restaurant.

Planning permission has been granted for a physical and personal training facility, but the owners of the new business are now seeking permission to have a GP on site on specific days of the week.

Edward Smith is setting up the business with a colleague, which will be called Physed.

Mr Smith said: "We want to be able to create bespoke plans for people. The GP service will be for our clients. People could come in at any time and have a check-up, provided they are our members."

The two personal trainers are hoping to create a private gym with no more than 45 clients on their books. The owners would like a private GP on site to advise their clients and deal with any problems.

Julie Taylor, head of contracts at Harrow Primary Care Trust, commissions NHS doctors in the area, said: "It's unusual, but if it is a private GP surgery with doctors in case something goes wrong, that is less unusual.

"A large health centre might want to a doctor to help with the equipment. We don't have any vacant contracts in that area, but times are changing and it could be the company is trying to think of ways to make money."

The building, which dates back to the 16th century, will not be renovated in any way.
