HAYES and Harlington Rail Station is to get a £800,000 overhaul, with work due to start in two weeks.

The upgrade at the station will include a new ticket office, refurbished lighting and flooring, a new waiting room and toilets, and a canopy cover at the front of the historic Victorian building.

Passengers will also be able to enter the station through a new foyer, as well as through the existing entrance on Station Road.

The building work will commence on May 23, and is expected to take up to four months.

These improvements come in advance of the multi-million pound Crossrail project, due to come to Hayes in 2019.

David Brough, Chairman of Hayes Town Partnership, said: "These plans are a fantastic boost for Hayes and for rail passengers.

"We are delighted the station will be brought up to modern standards and made easier, safer and more pleasant to use.

"For some time, the partnership has been pressing for early improvements rather than waiting for Crossrail, so we are delighted to have this upgrade in the meantime."

The Department for Transport’s National Stations Improvement Programme, delivered by First Group and Network Rail, has fronted £700,000 for the project, with the remaining £100,000 coming from mandatory financial contributions from developers building in the borough.
