CAMPAIGNERS from Harrow and Brent are protesting in Westminster over the lack of a ceasefire in the Sri Lankan civil war.

More than 500 protesters are in Parliament Square calling on the world powers to intervene in the conflict to bring about an end to the fighting.

A Tamil organisation called Tamil Info confirmed today: "A lot of the youngsters protesting at Parliament Square are from Harrow and Brent."

The demonstration is being held, Tamil Info said in a press release, because: "The government of Sri Lanka that they have now ‘captured’ all of the land controlled by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and that members of LTTE are now cornered within the ‘no fire zone’.

"This announcement has made the already anxious and worried friends and relatives of the innocent Tamil civilians of the Vanni around the World even more concerned for their safety and security.

"By this announcement and by not heeding to international calls for a ceasefire the government of Sri Lanka has openly acknowledged that it is going to continue with the massacre of Tamils even within the ‘no fire zone’."

A 100,000-strong crowd marched through London on Saturday April 11 to call for a ceasefire and since then there have been smaller daily protests in Parliament Square, including two young men from South London going on hunger strike.
