A HARROW primary school is the first in the capital to be rated as 'outstanding' under new tougher inspections.

Stanburn First School, in Abercorn Road, Stanmore, was awarded top marks by inspection body Ofsted despite hardened criteria, and was described in the report as an 'excellent school which embraces new developments to ensure pupils receive the highest quality learning'.

Inspectors were particularly impressed with the school's unique history lessons held in its very own 'Blast Shelter' and it's partnership with a school in Uganda.

Stanburn school was also praised for its extensive range of visitors, visits, clubs and opportunities for learning outdoors and the school have an increased emphasis on ensuring boys achieve as well as girls.

Also singled out for praise was the leadership of the headteacher, senior staff and governors.

According to Ofsted, parents cannot speak highly enough of the school. The report includes quotes from parents, such as: 'We find Stanburn an excellent school. Our daughter has made tremendous progress since starting school,' and 'Very happy with the school and so pleased with my children's education and discipline'.

Anne Drakeford, headteacher at Stanburn for the last 20 years, said: "The whole school is really very happy with the report we have received from Ofsted. Credit goes to all those involved - children, parents, staff and governors. Teamwork is the most important single word at our school."

The new tougher inspection criteria has seen inspectors spending twice as much time observing teachers, a shorter notice period of inspection given to schools and increased focus on the learning of those most likely to underachieve.

And as the first school to achieve top marks under the new guidelines councillor Anjana Patel, responsible for schools and children's development, was keen to praise the school's work.

She said: "I am very pleased with the results of this inspection. For any school to inspire such praise from both from Ofsted and from parents is an excellent achievement. The team at Stanburn First school is providing the best education for its pupils and should be proud of itself."
