A CELTIC cover of perhaps the most famous Christmas single ever has been released in aid of St Luke's Hospice.
Nearly 20 London-Irish rock and folk musicians came together to produce their own version of the Band Aid chart-topping song ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ from 1984.
Downloading the track is free but listeners are urged to make a donation to the hospice in Kenton Grange, Kenton.
The project was the brainchild of The BibleCode Sunday bandmates Enda Mulloy, 34, and Ronan MacManus.
Mr Mulloy said: “We usually do charity work for St Luke's Hospice if we can.
“We were due to play a fundraising gig in November but it didn't go ahead for one reason or another.
“We were gigging one night not so long ago when the idea came to me.
“Fellow band member Ronan I were talking about the original 'Do They Know It's Christmas' video and how much craic they must have had doing it, and we thought it'd be a great to do an Irish version for charity. “The next day I wrote up a plan who would be sitting each part and asked everybody if they would take part. Of course, everybody was delighted to do it.”
Two weeks later the track was recorded at Panic Studios in Park Royal on November 20 and the motley crew of collaborators needed a name: The Ginger Melodeon Experience.
“Melodeon is an Irish musical instrument but it's a slang term for somebody who's going off the rails,” said Mr Mullor.
“The name describes the group, the musical styles associated with it and the typical hair colour.”
Pam Russell, director of fundraising and community relations: "We are delighted that a local group has decided to support St Luke’s this way, and wish them the best of luck with their single.
“Every penny raised will help St Luke’s to continue to provide free hospice care for the people of Harrow and Brent."
Mr Mulloy said: “It's phenomenal the response. Within two days we had had 3,500 hits on YouTube and we've raised more than £1,400.”
