Now the 34-year-old, who lives off West Street, will next been seen on our TV screens in the semi-final heat tomorrow evening.

The first task in the quarter-final episode was an invention challenge, where Mrs Berry and her fellow-contestants had to come up dishes made from kitchen off-cuts, scrap food, and trimmings.

Her concoction of bone marrow and beef croquette served with mousseline purée, a broccoli stalk and red wine reduction pleased hosts Marcus Wareing and Monica Galetti, though they both felt she was cooking within herself and playing it safe.

Next up for the mum-of-one, who runs her own business Catering on the Hill, was the daunting task of cooking a two-course menu for some of the country's toughest restaurant critics – Charles Campion, William Sitwell and Jay Rayner, son of late agony aunt Claire Rayner, who lived in Harrow.

Mrs Berry, who is originally from Bahia in Brazil, used her South American knowledge to impress judges with rare and unusual dishes.

Her main dish was smoked duck breast with puréed cassava, black eyed bean and chorizo farofa mash with toasted cassava flour, butter and salt, with glazed peaches and red wine sauce.

Her desert was açaí sorbet with granola meringue and coconut, which piqued the judges interest, though they said afterwards that they found it too sweet.

However, they were still impressed with what they had seen to send her through to the next round.

Afterwards, Mrs Berry said: “It was amazing. I said on TV I was so happy I could scream, and they said I could, so I did!”
