Two girls who were born in a city which was still reeling from a world war were inseparable as children.

Nikki and Rosemary, who was known as Ro, grew up within yards of each other in Harrow. They formed a friendship which would last a lifetime, which has been captured in the book Harrow Girls Promises Kept.

The book charts the three love stories of Lloyd and Nikki, Ro and John, then later of Lloyd and Ro after they form a relationship after losing their partners.

Lloyd and Ro are hoping the book will help to keep their Harrow friendships alive.

The couple now live for half the year in Florida and the other half in Vancouver, however, the launch of the book reunited them with old friends in Harrow and they hope to organise a reunion every year to share memories.

It was something we wanted to do to tell everyone and say to every one that there is life after the death of a spouse or a loved one, said Lloyd.

There is always something round the corner that you never suspect and you can overcome the tragedy.

The book charts the lives of Nikki and Ro, one of whom lived in Harley Crescent and the other in Harley Road. They had full, lively and enjoyable childhoods and went on to have varied and exciting lives in various corners of the world.

Local boy John Letts swept Ro off her feet after a rock n roll party. The couple married the following year, in 1966, and moved to Seattle on the US west coast for one year.

Ro, now 66, said: After this, I came back and had quintuplets, in 1969.

Shortly after the multiple birth, the couple emigrated with their children to Vancouver in Canada.

However, John died of cancer in 1987.

Prior to Johns death, John and Ro had formed a strong friendship with Nikki and her husband Lloyd, a Florida farm boy who had taken the girl from Harrow to live in his home state.

Lloyd worked for Delta Airlines and, despite the long flight, the couple would sometimes fly back to Harrow at weekends for parties.

Lloyd said: It was a great time. Someone would ring us up and ask if we wanted to come over. It was easy just to hop on a plane and we would be back in time for work on Monday.

The couple also spent 25 years living in Scotland and, during that time, they visited their friends in Harrow each year.

As they all grew older, however, the group became smaller as a number of friends passed away. Sadly, 18 months ago, Nikki lost her life to cancer.

Lloyd said: The book is dedicated to Nikki and John we did it for them. The story is about the way our lives crossed over.

We did stay close to the other Harrow girls and boys, but many of them have passed away now.

For me it has really been a help. It was a struggle at times and I did the last chapter with tears in my eyes.

Ro and Johns quintuplets are now 43, and mostly living in Canada.

Nikki and Lloyd had a daughter, Juliet, who is finishing her second masters degree in Sheffield.

Tragically, their son, Jonathan, committed suicide shortly after his mothers death.

Lloyd said: We are working on a sequel at the moment and many things which have happened since will be included.

So far on this book, the response has been very favourable.
