A RUNNING reverend will jog 100 kilometres in one day in an attempt to raise money to help people suffering with leprosy.

Martin Davies, vicar at St Mary's Church in Church Hill, Harefield will cover the distance - just over 60 miles - along the Grand Union Canal towpath to raise money for the Nepal Leprosy Trust’s work at Lalgadh Leprosy Services Centre (LLSC).

Mr Davies has travelled to Nepal in connection with projects there and after seeing the work that is being done, he was determined to do something to help people suffering with the disease.

“This is the most I have ever run on one day, so the challenge of doing the ‘impossible’ gripped me,” said Mr Davies.

“I have been to Nepal and other countries and have met leprosy-affected people being treated very effectively in these amazing hospitals.”

In preparation, he has been doing 12 and 15-mile runs as he plans to run the 60 miles in those mileage blocks with a small rest in between each.

Mr Davies is no stranger to athletic challenges - he has run a number of marathons and last year ran the whole length of the Grand Union Canal - 147 miles - from Birmingham to London over five days.

“I’m a bit apprehensive but excited at the challenge,” he said.

“I have sustained a running injury in my leg which is causing me problems at the moment, so I’m hoping this won’t be a difficulty on the day.”

He is aiming to raise £6,000 and has so far collected £830 of online donations.

He will complete the challenge on Saturday, June 28.

Nepal Leprosy Trust is a UK-based Christian agency that provides services to people affected by leprosy in the Country of Nepal.
