YOUNG journalists at a borough school were among thousands around the country making the news

Harefield Academy, in Northwood Way, took part in the BBC News project, School Report, in which pupils get their own slot to report events and issues important to them.

The year 10 and year 13 pupils filmed and edited a piece about the academy’s new boarding house, which opened in September.

They also interviewed year 13 swimmer Karly Mann, who is hoping to qualify for the Olympic games this year.

The group had a tight deadline to finish the piece, with work needing to be posted to their website by a certain time.

English teacher Andy Gibb, who helped the pupils make their reports, said: “The students have been absolutely superb at organising, planning and creating brilliant news stories relevant to the school.

“It was a frantic day and the students coped well in the face of the looming deadlines.”

The project is mostly aimed at engaging 11-to-16-year-olds in the news, with older students drafted in to give guidance.

It has been backed by ex-teacher and BBC News presenter Huw Edwards, who said: “I’m involved because I want to give young people the chance to make the news themselves, and I want to share the principles of good journalism.”

Coverage of the pupil’s activities will appear on BBC programmes and school reporters will have chance to carry on reporting the news during the summer term.
