Police officers in the borough have paid tribute to a former colleague who died after a hit and run incident.

PC Andrew Duncan, 47, died from injuries he sustained during a collision while carrying out speed checks in Sutton on Sunday (22).

The married father-of-two had previously worked with Hammersmith and Fulham Police in 2003. His former workmates took to Twitter to pay their respects.

"Thoughts of everyone at @MPSHammFul with our colleague PC Andrew Duncan who died this morning," they said. “Our thoughts with family & friends.”

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe said: “Andy was a hard working and courageous policeman. He served the community as both a policeman and as a Scouting volunteer.

“The night he was injured, he was doing a job that he loved and we all had every right to expect he would return safely to his home and family - tragically this was not the case.”

Gary Bromige, 25, from South Norwood, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and driving without insurance.

Mr Duncan joined the force in 1990 at Battersea, then worked at the South-West Territorial Support Group before joining Hammersmith and Fulham Police. He had worked with the South-West Traffic Unit since 2004.
