THEY are among the borough's best assets, and now some of Hammersmith and Fulham's best-loved parks are set to become even more amenable following the announcement of a £4.5million improvement programme.

Sixteen of the borough's 62 green spaces are included in the scheme, which will take place over the next three years.

In the first phase, a new pavilion will be built on Brook Green, sports facilities will be improved in South Park, Fulham, and the play area in Hammersmith Park, Shepherd's Bush, will get a makeover.

In 2014-15, improvements will be made to Frank Banfield Park, Hammersmith, while Wormholt Park will receive a complete refurbishment at a cost of £1m.

The year after, the Astroturf will be resurfaced at Ravenscourt Park, Hammersmith, and Eel Brook Common, Fulham, will see improvements at the north end, towards Effie Road.

Other parks set for a boost are Wormwood Scrubs, Hurlingham Park, Normand Park, Rowberry Mead, Gwendwr Road, Marcus Garvey Park, Cathnor Park and Lillie Road Recreation Ground.

Deputy council leader Greg Smith said: “We understand how important beautiful, well maintained parks are for residents and that is why we have committed to spending such a large sum of money

“This borough has some of the most tranquil and picturesque parks in London and we are looking forward to carrying out this huge raft of improvements over the next three years."

Three-quarters of the funds needed for the improvements will come out of contributions from developers, while the council will pay for the rest.

Nine of the borough's parks were listed among the best in the country last year at the Green Flag Awards.
