Fifteen residents of a block of flats in West Ealing had to be evacuated from their homes last night by firefighters.
They were ordered out shortly after 8pm (on August 28) while crews investigated a 'strong smell of an unknown substance' coming from a block of flats on Uxbridge Road in W13.
Firefighters used specialist equipment to carry out a sweep of the fourth floor. As a precaution 15 people were asked to leave the flats and were checked over by London Ambulance Service, and a further 50 people were evacuated from a gym on the ground floor of the block.
Four fire engines and around 20 firefighters and officers from Ealing, Southall and Acton fire stations attended, as well as a range of specialist vehicles and equipment. However a thorough investigation detected no raised chemical levels and people were allowed to return to their homes at 11:37pm.
