A robber with a fake handgun smashed the display cabinets at a jewellers to steal rings.

The thief burst into Sophia Jewellery, in The Broadway, Stanmore, at 10.10am last Thursday.

The shop closed for a day following the incident, but reopened on Monday and business has returned to normal.

Beverley Lines, from Flower Vogue, in The Broadway, saw the aftermath of the incident.

She said: "There was glass on the floor. It looked like he'd smashed the windows in the cabinets at the front, grabbed items and ran away.

"It does make you wary working here, but it happens everywhere now.

"I doubt it will be the last time." When contacted by the Observer Sophia Jewellery declined to comment.

Following the incident a 36-year-old man was arrested on Friday and has been charged with nine offences and two charges of possession of a firearm with intent to commit an offence, and a charge of possession of an imitation firearm.

The incidents from September 4 until December 4 include a residential burglary in Watford and the armed robbery of two post offices in Kings Langley and North Watford.

Paul Wakenshaw, formerly of Fourth Avenue, Watford, has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at St Albans Crown Court on February 9, 2009.
