POLITICS was the topic of the day as Liberal Democrat Vince Cable gave students a peek into the ways of government.

The Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills visited Gumley House Convent School, in Isleworth, on Friday November 9 to give a talk to sixth form students with the aim of increasing their political awareness.

Having been MP for Twickenham since 1997 and playing a major part in the current coalition, Mr Cable has a lot of knowledge to impart, which he did on the day, telling the girls all about voting and why it is important.

He also told them what it is like to be an MP and a cabinet minister which may have inspired the 16 to 18 year olds to become future politicians.

Hannah Thomas, 17, is studying politics at Gumley. She said how it was encouraging to see an MP take an interest in young people because they are all trying to become more politically aware despite society displaying a different message of the youth of today.

Her class mate, Dominika Cichonska, 17, said: "Having learnt the theory of politics as a student of this subject, I found Vince Cable’s examples of what really happens in the government fascinating.

"Also, his views on the coalition were very important seeing as the media can shape our views on this matter. Overall, there is no better way to be exposed to politics than having a politician talk to you!"
