More than 1,000 people have signed a petition calling on Hounslow's roads chiefs to improve safety on a dangerous stretch of the Great West Road following the death of Brentford cyclist Michael Fletcher.

Dozens of cyclists, drivers and pedestrians have signed both online and paper version which demands changes to be made to a number of points along the A4.

Brentford councillor Matt Harmer set up the petition shortly after well-known community figure Michael Fletcher was killed on the busy road at the junction with Windmill Road on November 26 last year.

"The A4 is the vein through Hounslow and we want to have it as safe as possible for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers," said Cllr Harmer. "It's more than just that one stretch of road where Michael was killed though, it's the cycle paths across the borough that need to be looked at."

He intends on taking the petition, which contains 1,071 signatures, to the next full council meeting to ask for support and to encourage agencies such as Transport for London, the police and the Highways Agency to help.

The petition comes at the same time as Mayor Boris Johnson's announcement that only one out of Hounslow's nine schemes to promote safer cycling will receive funding due to cuts to the budget of the London Cycle Network Plus (LCN+).

Jenny Jones, Green Party member of the London Assembly, said: "Decreasing expenditure on the LCN+ sends out the wrong message about cycling and road safety.

"At a time when we need LCN+ schemes to make road layouts, dangerous junctions and roundabouts safer for cyclists, nearly nine-tenths of Hounslow's schemes have been cut."

Cllr Harmer hopes the petition will be 'a statement of intent' and believes they are on their way to making changes for the better.
