Teachers at a Hounslowv special needs school are turning sleuth in the hope of tracking down 'disgraceful' thieves who plundered turf from their recently laid lawn.
Staff at Marjory Kinnon School, in Bedfont, were horrified when their beautifully-rennovated play area was targeted by callous crooks just three days after it was finished.
Site manager Pat Clark said: "The kids had only been back at school two days when the turf started disappearing. They took a load on September 4 and then came back a few days later for some more.
"I think it's absolutely disgraceful - they must have known they were stealing from a special needs school. Who would do such a thing?"
The school is now left with an unsightly bald patch where the 16 strips of turf once lay. As they were recently planted, and had not yet taken root, staff believe they would have been easy to remove.
But they are convinced somebody must have spotted the thieves as they made off with their loot along the footpath that runs beside the school.
Several pieces of turf were later recovered in the Hatton Road Allotments and it is believed the cold-hearted criminals may have headed down the footpath towards Richmond Avenue.
"It's just such a shame," said Ms Clark. "It's so expensive. We'll have to find the money to replace it but that will mean the kids losing out somewhere else."
The school are asking anyone who spotted people carting piles of turf around the area earlier this month, or who has noticed a new lawn appearing without a legitimate delivery, to get in touch with them.
Ms Clark added: "I just don't think whoever did this should get away with it. It's disgusting behaviour and they should be thor-oughly ashamed."
If you have any information about the missing lawn please call the school on 020 8890 8890.
