Two uniformed groups have been recommended to be awarded the Freedom of the Borough of Harrow - whose previous recipients include former Prime Minister Winston Churchill, athlete Roger Bannister and scientist Sir Paul Nurse.

Councillors will vote on Thursday whether to convene a special meeting to consider granting the special honour on the North West London District of Christian youth organization Girls Brigade, and the 1454 (Harrow) Squadron Air Training Corps, based in Northolt Road, South Harrow.

The council has form in rewarding this kind of contribution. In October 1994 councillors approved the freedom of the borough on Christ Church, Roxeth and Harrow Company of the Church Lads' and Girls' Church Brigade "in recognition of its centenary and the outstanding continuous service provided by the Brigade to the Harrow area".

If agreed, representatives from the squadron and the brigade would be presented with separate ceremonial scrolls at a special presentation.

The North West London District of the Girls Brigade consists of eight companies -1st Edgware, 5th Hendon, 1st Kenton, 2nd Northolt, 1st Queensbury, 1st Stanmore, 1st Sudbury Hill and 1st Sudbury

Town - and has been has been working in the area for more than 80 years.

The 1454 Harrow Squadron Air Training Corps (ATC) has its origins in the Air Defence Cadet Corps which was formed under the auspices of the Air League of the British Empire.

In February 1941, 1454 (Harrow) which is part of the Middlesex Wing, received its Royal Warrant and remains the oldest ATC squadron to operate continuously, 73 years since its formation.
