Getwestlondon journalist Poppy Bradbury had her luscious locks shaved off for a children’s cancer wig charity.

The Shepherd’s Bush and Westminster reporter braved the clippers on Saturday (March 5) to donate her hair to the Little Princess Trust, a charity which makes wigs for children across the UK and Ireland who have lost their hair through cancer treatment and other illnesses.

She follows in the footsteps of singer Jessie J who famously shaved her head for the charity a year ago.

Having grown her hair for three years Poppy's locks were two feet long and could provide up to three wigs for girls and boys.

The 26-year-old, of Overstone Road, Hammersmith, decided to donate her hair after a family friend who had bowel cancer last year lost her hair and wore a wig.

As well as donating her long hair to the charity, Poppy has been raising money and initially put a £200 target on her feat but has well surpassed that figure.

Friends, family and kind strangers impressed with her effort have donated just under £1,500 as of Monday afternoon - seven times more than Poppy hoped for.

Hairdresser Daniel Bernard from Light Hair Studio in Notting Hill helped out as well by offering his services free of charge which she was very grateful for.

Poppy said: “I was so nervous before I had my head shaved, I was shaking and my sister got me some champagne which I gulped down but then after they’d done it I just thought of the kids who will be getting my hair and how much they will have suffered so I didn't really have anything to worry about.

“I’ve been growing my hair for a while and have only had a trim once in three years. I wanted a change so I thought I might as well as do it for charity. I had 15 family and friends supporting me on the day and everybody was so lovely afterwards, saying it suits me.

“At first it was just about the wigs and I thought I’d see if I could raise a bit of money for the charity as well but I could never have guessed how supportive and generous people would be. I’ve had quite a few anonymous donations and some from people I’ve never met but work in the same building.

“I’m really glad I’ve shaved my hair for such a good cause and hope it can help make some children happy as they go through a terrible time.”

She added that she would be willing to do the same thing again a few years down the line as it is such a good cause.

There is still time to donate, go to the online fundraising page .
