Tesco looks set to open a new supermarket in Fulham, despite opposition from neighbours and traders.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council has granted planning permission for the 333 square metre shop in Munster Road.

Although the current proposals only attracted 15 objection letters, 711 people signed a petition against a previously rejected similar Tesco application last October.

Objectors fear the supermarket will take custom from independent retailers and endanger pedestrians because of the extra traffic it will generate.

Robert Gillespie, 45, is the manager of Dawes Road interior design shop Beldecor.

He said: "There is a sense of community here and that will just be destroyed."We need a variety of shops here and I do not think Tesco can supply that."

Mr Gillespie fears small shops will close once Tesco begins trading.

He added: "There is already Budgens 50 metres away, another Tesco 300 yards away, Waitrose at the end of Dawes Road and a Sainsburys in Fulham Palace Road. "We are surrounded by supermarkets."

Tesco spokesman Carol Leslie beleives the supermarket will boost other shops' trade.

She added: "When we first bought the site we did a public consultation and there was a lot of support for the shop. It is all about traders working together to provide variety and keep shoppers in the area."

Planning officers accept that proposals to move a Zebra crossing near the shop would ensure pedestrians can still cross Munster Road safely.

A loading bay will also be marked out and the pavement will be widened.

The previous scheme was rejected in October because councillors were concerned about the impact of delivery vehicles on Munster Road.

They were also worried about increased parking pressure.

Tesco has now commissioned studies showing noise will not increase and that only three customers' cars would be parked at any one time.
