FRIENDS and loved ones of a Hillingdon primary school teacher who died from cervical cancer are starring in a theatrical fundraiser to raise money in her memory.

Gemma Ashe passed away tragically in May last year aged just 25, and her friends and former students are staging a musical one year on to raise money for the Willow Foundation, a charity which helps the terminally ill.

The musical, entitled 'Just Beyond The Stars', will take place with a one-off performance to be held on Sunday 24 May, at the Beck Theatre in Hayes, and is the latest in a number of fundraising events set up, which have already raised £20,000.

Gemma lived in Turnpike Lane, Uxbridge, and taught at St Bernadette's School in Long Lane, Hillingdon, and many of her former pupils are starring in the musical.

The musical is being organised by Gemma's two sisters who are currently in the Far-East, fulfilling their sister's dream for them to go travelling around the world.

Tara Ashe, Gemma's sister, said: "Gemma had a great love for musicals and dancing, from taking part in school and youth theatre productions to entertaining herself and others by singing around the house, so we thought what better way of celebrating her memory than with a show.

"Gemma benefited from a special day provided by charity and would love for other young people who are suffering to benefit."

After Gemma was diagnosed with cancer in April 2007, the Willow Foundation provided Gemma with a day out at a luxury spa, one of 4,500 special days the charity has laid on over the last 10 years.

The event is being billed as a whistle-stop tour through Gemma's favourite musicals including Grease, The Lion King, and Hairspray.

The incredible work of fundraising has not gone unnoticed, former Arsenal goalkeeper and TV presenter Bob Wilson, who set up the Willow Foundation after daughter died of cancer aged just 31, said their hard work should not go unnoticed.

He said: "We are astonished by the support we have received from Gemma’s friends and family.

"They have raised a phenomenal amount of money, fulfilling Gemma’s wish of providing more special days for seriously ill young adults.

"She obviously touched many peoples lives, and by fundraising in her memory is continuing to do so.

"Many thanks go to them for their continued support."
