TWO councillors associated with the library closures in Brent have been deselected as candidates for Labour.

Ann John, former council leader, and James Powney, former lead member for environment and neighbourhood, were deselected by their local groups at meetings in the last week.

Ann John, who was Labour leader of Brent Council until May last year, was on the shortlist for the Stonebridge ward but was not selected by local members as one of three people who will stand in the local elections in 2014 for the party.

Current councillor Zaffar Van Kalwala, Cheryl Henry and Ernest Ezeajughi were chosen to stand.

Stonebridge councillor Colum Moloney was also deselected at the meeting on Tuesday May 14.

Last week at a meeting for local Labour members in Kensal Green councillor James Powney was deselected and will not be able to stand in the ward in two years.

Former lead member for housing Janice Long was also deselected in the Harlesden ward.

Local meetings are currently taking place and all wards are expected to be decided by the end of next week.
