Former hostage John McCarthy will be the keynote speaker at the annual conference of a bereavement charity.

Harrow Bereavement Care, which also helps people in many parts of Hillingdon borough, is holding its 33rd annual conference on Wednesday, October 22.

The author, journalist and broadcaster will be speaking about his loss of freedom during the 1,943 days he spent in captivity in the Lebanon from 1986-1991.

Harrow Bereavement Care works to relieve the suffering and distress caused by bereavement , in children and adults, regardless of age, gender, religion, cultural or ethnic background.

The charity, which has been based in Pinner Road, Harrow for over 30 years, relies on 130 volunteers who are trained to help people explore their grief and loss. The service is completely free of charge and confidential.

The conference, entitled ‘Lost and Found – Finding your way through bereavement’, will be at Middlesex New Synagogue in Bessborough Road, Harrow. It starts at 10am.

There will also be a celebration evening to acknowledge the contribution made by the volunteers, in the members’ lounge at Harrow Civic Centre on Thursday, September 4.
