Detectives investigating the death of a player at a football match in Harlington on Sunday has been named as Brentford man Stephen Ritchie.

Police were called shortly after 12.20pm to Little Harlington Playing Fields, in Sipson Lane, Harlington, following reports of an assault.

It is believed Mr Ritchie, 43, was involved in an altercation with members of the opposing team following the final whistle.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by arriving ambulance crews and a post mortem today at Uxbridge Mortuary gave the cause of death as a head injury.

Police said his death is being treated as suspicious and an inquest will be opened and adjourned in due course.

An incident room has been opened under DCI Nicky Wall of the Homicide and Serious Crime Command (HSCC).

Two 20-year-old  men have been arrested in connection with the man's death and are currently in custody at a west London police station.
