SIX men were arrested inside Wembley Stadium last night after a 44-year-old Wales football fan died following an assault.

Police were called to an area outside the ground at around 7.20pm last night, just before kick off in the England v Wales football match, to reports of the incident and made the arrests inside the Wales supporters' area of the ground.

The man suffered head injuries and was taken by London Ambulance Service to a central London hospital and was pronounced dead at 8.50pm.

A post-mortem examination will be scheduled in due course.

Police believe they know the identity of the fan and although they have not formally identified him, as they await confirmation that next of kin have been informed, thousands of messages have been left on football forums and social network sites revealing that the man who died is thought to be Cardiff City fan Mike Dye.

Officers from the Homicide & Serious Crime Command are investigating, and inquiries continue to establish the full circumstances of the incident.

An incident room will open later today. At present anyone with information that may assist the inquiry should call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. ?
