A FLAG-raising ceremony at Southall Town Hall kickstarted a national campaign to promote pride in Britain among people from different backgrounds.

The ceremony, a prelude to Fly With Pride held on Sunday, was conducted by world famous Indian bhangra singer, Channi Singh.

He was joined by Ealing Southall MP Virendra Sharma, Ealing Council leader Julian Bell, the CEO of campaign group One Britain One Nation Kash Singh and civic leaders from a variety of backgrounds, who raised the Union Flag on Tuesday as a sign of their pride in Britain and British-ness.

Fly With Pride has been organised by One Britain One Nation to create a sense of national unity and shared pride in British identity.

The campaign will see churches and Sikh temples in cities across the UK fly the flag and organise celebrations and prayers.

People from every culture, background and faith all over the country are encouraged to unite for an organised national demonstration of their love for Great Britain.

Mr Sharma said: “Fly with Pride exemplifies the simple message of One Britain One Nation, based on a set of shared values where freedom, democracy, fair play, respect and tolerance are celebrated and embraced. We must be united and bring all communities and all faith groups together in one British nation for the betterment of society."

Channi Singh helped raise the flag above Southall Town Hall, and said: “It is an honour for me to be associated with such a worthy cause that focuses on uniting the people of this country as one and encourages all to join in.”

Kash Singh, added: "I am very inspired by all those people who are supporting the vision of One Britain One Nation and for me this flag-raising in Southall is the vehicle to unite the people of this country regardless of one’s background."
