This is the first photo of a sinkhole which opened up on the borders of Osterley and Isleworth this week.

The crater, which is 6ft wide and 4.5ft deep, appeared in the southern carriageway of Thornbury Road, at the junction with Eversley Crescent, on Tuesday (July 29).

Hounslow Highways, the council's streets contractor, cordoned the chasm off after being alerted by residents.

Engineers were yesterday investigating the cause of the collapse, which remains a mystery.

It is understood diversions remain in place this morning as work continues to repair the damage.

In March, a similarly sized sinkhole in Northwood also left experts scratching their heads.
