Passers-by in Acton were alarmed to see a fire crew apparently tackling a blaze on the sixth floor of a block of flats on Saturday.

They watched as around 30 crew (from five fire engines) gained access to the flat in Graham Tower in Hanbury Road in Acton. It looked genuine but actually the firefighters were taking part in training exercise to test their readiness.

Dummies and synthetic smoke were also used as part of the exercise in an effort to make it as realistic as possible.

The London Fire Brigade said afterwards that the training drill emphasised how vital it was for people living in flats to have a fire safety plan evacuation plan.

A spokesperson said: "The exercise highlights the importance of having a fire safety plan and knowing what to do in event of a fire if you live in a high rise or purpose-built flat."
