CHARITY bosses are cursing their luck after their new home was flooded just weeks after being targeted in a suspected arson attack.
Kids Can Achieve, at Cedars Hall in Chicheley Gardens, Harrow Weald, had yet to repair the window and roof damage caused by the fire in January when a water main burst at 8am on Saturday in nearby Uxbridge Road and floodwater seeped into all but one room of the newly decorated building.
Pat Lee, operations manager at the charity, which supports children with behavioural difficulties, said: “We couldn’t believe it. The whole building was about 3in deep in water.
“There’s still damp in the walls but we think the building itself is going to be all right. However, we have lost a lot of specialist equipment, such as soft mattresses and play equipment that were soaked with contaminated water and had to be thrown out.”
Ms Lee said a planned session at the centre on Saturday was turned into an outing instead so as to not disappoint families.
“The children are upset and disappointed and we’re hoping that we can put things right as soon as possible. Some of the children will not be able to use the facilities because we rely on the sensory room for those with communication difficulties.
“It’s not going to stop us by any means and instead of accommodating children in the hall, we will take them out.”
The double whammy comes after a promised £30,000 grant failed to materialise, putting enormous pressure on the organisation’s finances.
Ms Lee added: “The equipment is going to cost several thousand pounds to replace. If somebody was able to donate some large gym-style mattresses that would be very helpful as a stop-gap measure.”
A Veolia Water spokeswoman said: “Veolia Water would like to apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused by a burst 12in water main which caused some residents to be without water for part of the morning.
“Our teams did everything possible to help the charity with plans to repair damage caused by the flooding.”
